Max pain by ticker

Where the option chain says the pain is, for 43 widely traded tickers — plus put/call ratios, open-interest walls, and gamma exposure for 43 of them. Free, no key, no login. The site is rebuilt nightly from the latest upstream settlement available. The latest settlement in this build is 2026-09-03; individual ticker pages may carry different dates.

Free  Max Pain is part of the free side of Quant Data, together with the gamma exposure (GEX) dashboards computed from the same nightly chains. It exists because it is the cleanest first dataset for someone learning how options positioning is measured: the input is public, the arithmetic is simple enough to do by hand, and the conclusion you are allowed to draw from it is narrow. If a page here teaches you what a number does not tell you, it has done its job.

“Nightly” describes the rebuild cadence, not live or same-day data. The latest available snapshots in this build span 2026-09-03 to 2026-09-03; every row and ticker page states its own open-interest settlement date.

What each column actually means

Nothing here is a proprietary indicator. Every column is arithmetic on open interest — the number of option contracts that exist and have not yet been closed or expired. Open interest is settled once a day by the clearing house, which is why none of these numbers can update intraday.

Last price

The closing price of the underlying shares in the same snapshot. It is the anchor for every distance on the page. We show its own date separately on the ticker page, because the price file and the option file do not always close on the same day.

Front expiry

The nearest expiration in the dated chain that has not passed by the site build. Options on liquid names expire several times a week, so the displayed contract rolls constantly — which is why a max pain series is a set of dated snapshots, not a continuous line.

Max pain

The settlement price at which the total payout to everyone holding options would be at its smallest. Buyers lose the most there, sellers keep the most. It is computed by testing every strike as a hypothetical settlement price and taking the cheapest one.

Price vs MP

How far the last price is from max pain, as a percentage. Positive means the shares are trading above the max pain level, negative means below. It is a distance between two numbers on the same night, nothing more — we have not measured what a large gap or a small one goes on to mean.

Put/call

Put open interest divided by call open interest for the front expiration. Above 1 means more puts are outstanding. It measures how contracts are distributed, not sentiment — open interest cannot tell you who is long and who is short.

GEX

On tickers with a deep enough chain we also estimate gamma exposure: how many shares dealers must trade to stay hedged as price moves, and the flip level where that flow switches from damping moves to amplifying them.

Learn the concepts, not just the levels

A number without its limits is worse than no number. These three guides are written for someone who has never priced an option:

What is max pain?

The idea in plain English, the formula worked through by hand on a five-strike example, and an honest account of what the pinning research does and does not support.

What is gamma exposure (GEX)?

Why a dealer who sold you a call has to keep buying and selling shares, how that adds up across a whole chain, and why every public GEX number is an estimate with known flaws.

Max pain vs gamma exposure

Two metrics from the same open interest that answer different questions. What it means when they line up, and what it means when they point in opposite directions.

Building with an AI agent? These pages are static HTML with real tables, so an agent can read them directly — no key, no login. The numbers themselves also ship as JSON: GET /v1/maxpain/{symbol} and GET /v1/gamma/{symbol} cover any optionable US stock or ETF — not just the 43 tickers here — with every expiration and per-strike detail. One $149/month plan covers all four Quant Data endpoints: the options figures above plus price-action events and day-type probabilities and volume-wave events with measured win rates. See pricing and the API reference.

All figures are derived metrics from end-of-day open interest. The site is rebuilt nightly, but values remain stamped to their settlement dates and are not live quotes (how we compute them). Educational only: not investment advice, not a recommendation, not a price forecast.
